The picture is outside Mansion House, London in 1919. The post was from Remembrance Day yesterday: "101 years ago today: 11am on Tuesday 11th November 1919, crowds in London observe the very first 2 minute silence for those killed in the Great War. The men have removed their hats out of respect for the fallen. (I originally coloured this photo for the Evening Standard in 2019)."

...the BBC! Oh the irony! This would be the BBC that in it's efforts to help OWS (not me!) and other Occupy protests not look bad have lied, censored and omitted news? The BBC that had blanket favourable coverage of the Occupy London protests at St Paul's Cathedral etc? Hmmmm... Occupy's reasons state that "Because issues that deeply affect the British public are either under reported or not reported at all"...I agree entirely! Of course they mention a few things that get their goat, including the Million Mask March but of course the main event was in Washington D.C., how to report this ("Obama. Come out. We've got some shit to talk about") without reflecting badly on their Obamessiah? Another goat-getter: the secret EU-US trade agreement, so secret it's in the news every day; or the completely debunked BBC Breadth of Opinion Review on Content Analysis [pdf] to which they link to George Monbiot who says "The BBC puts a match to its principles every day". Yes, yes they do; however it is over real world issues such as The EU, Climate Change, US News and on Israel they they really need to sort out the warped and documented bias. Hey, maybe the BBC have infiltrated Occupy London and are instigating this event today so they can say we get accusations of bias from right and left so "we got it about right". PAH!

"Incredible colour footage of 1920s London shot by an early British pioneer of film named Claude Frisse-Greene, who made a series of travelogues using the colour process his father William - a noted cinematographer - was experimenting with. It's like a beautifully dusty old postcard you'd find in a junk store, but moving." (hat-tip Mice Height on BBBC).  Just made my day and it's only 8 a.m.

I don't want to end what has been a fantastic Olympics - especially for for Great Britain - on a sour note but...this is as good as it gets, as good as it will get: the Rio 2016 table may well have a similar top ten but we won't be third (and first or second is simply not going to happen): 65 medals in total; medals in 19 different events; gold/s in 13 of those events [Link], totally unexpected; absolutely fabulous. We have seen so many good role models the last two weeks: not spoilt football mega-rich brats, not soap opera slebs or reality TV wannabes but good strong patriotic excellence in British sportsmen and women. I hope at least part of the much mentioned legacy is to goad the UK's youngsters outside, GOAD, Go Out And Do!

Bojo's latest epistle in the DT opens with him at the ArcelorMittal Orbit structure in Stratford; "This sculpture is a masterpiece, far better and more rewarding up close than it appears at a distance". However, he goes on to reveal "everything that is wrong with the BBC and with this country"...and speaking "as one who has just fought a campaign in which I sometimes felt that my chief opponent was the local BBC news"!! Please read what he says about the BBC, Blair and Brown. An opinion which I share of course...

"the prevailing view of Beeb newsrooms is, with honourable exceptions, statist, corporatist, defeatist, anti-business, Europhile and, above all, overwhelmingly biased to the Left."

One Page In A Library of Millions draws our attention to a startling omission to Transport for London's redesign of the London Underground map as part of the Jubilympic celebrations. They missed out one of the most famous female athletes ever - the Flying Housewife - Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen who won four gold medals* at the 1948 Olympics...in London! Oh the irony! She was voted "Female Athlete of the Century" by the IAAF in 1999 and last month was made one of 12 inaugural members of the IAAF Hall of Fame. Royal Dutch Athletics Federation complained and TfL have apologised and will order reprints with a new map (more irony alert): TfL have said rather than dropping one of the 361 Olympians to make way for Blankers-Koen they would combine two Olympians on a single Tube station: US athlete Mary Decker and Zola Budd (oops).



* Fanny had decided to limit herself at those 1948 Olympics so she dropped the high jump and long (!!); she won four of the nine women's events. She was only the third person ever - and the first woman - to win four Olympic gold medals in a single Olympics.
