In the UK our vile media is turning into the what the USA is having to put up with, think BBC = CNN and you won't be far wrong except in the UK the public are FORCED to pay for the biased BBC. Here we currently have the Remainer-run Dominic Cummings witchhunt where the bubble and blob are really freaking out: over there, Cabot writes

"We had almost zero evidence of foreign interference in our elections, and half the country freaked out. Now, we have endless evidence of foreign interference on our campuses, and no one is batting an eye."

He adds that "People on campus are afraid to question China's influence efforts for fear of being labeled xenophobic or racist." Sure, but they will also be concerned they'll lose their funding: think of similar to the Arabian Islamic paid influence in many UK and European Universties, but x 10.

Odalisque in Red Pants, a painting by Henri Matisse has been handed back to Venezuela by the USA officials. Having been stolen in the early noughties it was found two years ago in Miami. An odalik was a sort of chambermaid/understudy concubine, and if she had 'extraordinary beauty or had exceptional talents in dancing or singing' [Wiki]

Later, the word odalisque came to refer to a mistress of a wealthy man or, for some Turks, a wife: "If any lady possesses a pretty-looking slave, the fact soon gets known. The gentlemen who wish to buy an odalisque or a wife, make their offers. Many Turks, indeed, prefer to take a slave as a wife, as, in such case, there is no need to dread fathers, mothers, or brothers-in-law, and other undesirable relations."



A smidgeon of good news I suppose in a country where shortages and rationing is the norm; that is getting harder and harder to get to and where the communicational hegemony (Caracas Chronicles) got a whole lot worse last week when El Universal (oft linked to from Owsblog and is/was Venezuela's oldest and last remaining independent newspaper and almost alone in having an English on-line version) was sold: apparently bought by a Spanish investment group which started barely a year ago and claims to have over one billion dollars in capital investments. [INFODIO]. There, Alex mentions that "according to current legislation, it is illegal for foreign corporations to own newspapers in Venezuela" ...so maybe we can guess where at least some of that countries stolen assets are going.

Things are heating up in Venezuela: now it isn't a case of 'We want a recount!', it has turned into "You stole the election!". [English] [Spanish]. The Electoral Commission has now dis-guarded even a pretence of being unbiased (and they still insist any vote audit - whenever they finally decide to say it might be - won't affect the election outcome!) and last night the fast-losing-any-credibility government decided to interrupt the broadcast: just as Capriles challenged the government his speech was interrupted by mandatory government broadcasting on all TV and radio networks! As Daniel says, "a cadena is the forced commandeering by the state of ALL TV AND RADIO STATIONS for a simultaneous broadcast". Why would this happen...well some may say that certain people need a Chavista to maintain power...and the Cubans in Venezuela that supervise many government offices and agencies, plus law enforcement, intelligence and military may have something to do with it. Just saying; HCR better watch his back...

The long-suffering Venezuelan people are poorer today, again. No surprise to hear that Venezuela has announced a (totally expected) currency devaluation (about 32%). Ah well, 22.2 percent [inflation] in January, increased foot shortages, verging on war-zone-like murder rates, gangster's paradise prisons...I could go on, the oil and gas industry producing less with far more employees; petrol and diesel are now being imported (wtf?!) yet oil now represents 96% of all exports; steel, aluminum, iron and bauxite industries on their knees. Corruption like you wouldn't believe (ironically the latest charges are against the opposition), not so good for business; oh and nepotism of course: Argenis Chavez (brother) is President of Corpoelec, the National Electric Corportation: Adan Chavez Frías is the governor of Barinas state in western Venezuela, and was Minister of Education (red education). Krusty's father Hugo de los Reyes Chavez was the previous governor of Barinas. Aníbal Jose Chavez is the current mayor of Sabaneta, Barinas; Krusty's cousin Asdrubal Chavez is Vice President of Refining for state oil company PDVSA...blah blah blah. And all the Chavernment sock puppet can do is waffle on like a child about the tricolour hat being his not Capriles'.
