Opposition options...

Well, not really, but it's going to get nasty. Clegg get's desperate: in fact Vince Cable has something similar too. Michael Savage reports in the Independent:

"Nick Clegg has launched an outspoken attack on life in Britain under Margaret Thatcher and blamed the former prime minister for sewing the seeds of the current economic crisis."

Sowing the seeds...indeed, imagine planting a sapling on open ground, watching it grow. After many years it is a tall tree and someone builds a house underneath it. When a bough breaks or a root bursts a foundation a few dimwits blame the person that planted the tree: such a dimwit is Clegg. He says "I remember very distinctly this sense that we were being told we should all place money above morality; put profit ahead of people; that we shouldn't worry about selling out. Because, at the end of the day, there was no such thing as society. But I looked around me and thought: no, there has to be more to life than this. There is more to us than this. Justice, fairness, community. We weren't ready to give in to that soulless, unforgiving Britain. That dog-eat-dog, get-rich-quick, look-after-number-one Britain. We didn't want to live in Thatcher's Britain. " Soundbite heaven; Clegg, I think you are a liar; I do not believe for an instant you remember this, distinctly or not.

Optimistic Obama odds-on?...

Yesterday Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez said that capitalism has failed and invited US president Barack Obama to join him of the road to socialism. [La Vanguardia, Spanish] "Come on it's the only way!"

"Para el presidente venezolano el capitalismo ha fracasado: "¡Venga Obama, alineese con nosotros rumbo al socialismo! ¡Venga, ese el único camino!"

What he seems not to have noticed is that Obama is already on that road! Or so it seems: Tim Reid, Washington correspondent for The Times: "It [last weeks $4-trillion budget] is a manifesto to usher in a new age of government activism that involves levels of borrowing and spending never before seen in the US and is a document of such staggering ambition and risk that even some of Mr Obama's Democratic supporters are suddenly beginning to feel a little queasy."...

"Its goal is not just to rescue the economy. It is to crush conservatism, end the age of anti-tax, anti-regulation policies that have been the guiding philosophies of US governance for a generation, and usher in a fresh 'epoch', as his aides call it, of New Deal-Great Society wealth redistribution and central intervention..."

I believe both Chavez and Obama are wrong about capitalism. But where have I heard that 'end of conservatism' before? Oh yes, I remember, Tony Blair. READER WARNING, reading THIS in full can induce severe vomiting...perhaps, at the moment, we're all on the road again...

On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way
Is on the road again...

Onanistic obsequious offal...

...and they loved it. Brown's speech to Congress. Listen if you dare [Guardian pop-up audio link] I guess these sort of occasions don't lend themselves to honesty and this sort of crock, full of banal inanities and claptrap, is expected. I did note he failed to mention that the current problems started in America (how odd, him being there and all should have reminded him). My favourite vomit-inducing moment was "There is no old Europe, no new Europe, there is only your friend Europe." (Ows shakes head in disbelief...who ALLOWS this stuff?)
