Bit late on this, wasn't going to post that I agreed with The Donald (I do) plus I have only just seen the cartoon below (SM Radio @SMohyeddin "The killing of #QassemSoleimani by Iranian artist @ManaNeyestani"). Apologies for all the Twitter links and also if you think my title is crass but some of the lefty-love-in reaction has been far more crass. Some interesting points about the 'real Soleimani' on THIS THREAD by Karim Sadjadpour whose first point may seem exaggerated: "1. There were many tributes to by Iranians who viewed him as a widely-beloved Persian Che Guevara, w/ little self-awareness for his role in the repression, displacement, and death of millions." and HERE from Masih Alinejad: "Some Iranians compared the funeral services for Soleimani to those held for the Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich..."

Obama seems to be thrashing about with an innate anti-Midas touch desperately trying to find something to enable him to be remembered for something good; he may manage it: there's still a while to go.  Let's hope he isn't remembered as the guy who heralded a new big bang: his overt 'cooling' towards Israel and even more overt crazy-gang bending-over-backwards to the Iranians (so poor that even the Democrats are questioning some of it) seem to indicate he wants a permanent solution to the Middle East problem...very permanent. Obama said,

"The issues at stake here are bigger than politics" ..."These are matters of war and peace."

Yeah, we know...but you seem intent on making war more likely?

No, not another POTUS debate (even though there is one left) and to be honest it may not even involve Obama, unless he wins...and unless it goes ahead: a report in the NYT says "U.S. Officials Say Iran Has Agreed to Nuclear Talks". Well agreed in principle but it will be a first...and could "[set] the stage for what could be a last-ditch diplomatic effort to avert a military strike on Iran". If the talks go ahead - I'm sure the Mullahs are against - I have no doubt that money will play a big part: Iran is hurting. Anyway, the point is the irony: news of these talks comes exactly 50 years since the last time the world has come near to actual nuclear strikes: next week is the 50th anniversary of Black Saturday, the 'eye to eye' of the Cuban Missile Crisis when 'while the risk of war was very high', however, "it was not caused by a clash of wills. The real dangers arose from 'the fog of war.' As the two superpowers geared up for a nuclear war, the chances of something going terribly wrong increased exponentially. To their credit, both Kennedy and Khrushchev understood this dynamic, which became particularly evident on the most nerve-racking day of all, 'Black Saturday.' By Saturday, Oct. 27, the two leaders were no longer in full control of their gigantic military machines..." interesting stuff; I doubt it could happen again, (could it? I really don't have faith in any of today's leaders) but as Michael Dobbs writes,

"The most important lesson [JFK] drew from it was that mistakes and misunderstandings can unleash an unpredictable chain of events, causing governments to go to war with little understanding of the consequences."

Ows views on a few things and what's what in the news:

1. Ryanair in trouble again over ads (see image, left), they've been here before so obviously know an effective way to get far more 'advertising' for their money.

2. The Falklands are British but at a push they are more French than Argentine so FUCK OFF Sean Penn (he of closeness to Hugo and Fidel) you midget lefty twat.[DT]

3. The 'planned' war with Iran is "on course" even down to the cliché of discovered passports on arrested bombers [NYT].

4. The various chapters of the Greek tragedy (a comedy of errors?) continue but has taken a very EU fascist turn: "In the hours before the vote, the cabinet lost six ministers; 40 dissenting MPs were stripped of their party membership and so excluded from re-election. As part of the deal, there will be new elections in two months' time." WTF? [Independent]

5. I will have my eyes closed as Arsenal enter their most important couple of weeks of the season: Champions League is back and Arsenal visit Milan in last 16 of Champions League then FA cup vs. Sunderland where we scrapped a win in the league last weekend and then near-neighbours and arch rivals Spuds in the league hoping to cement the finger-nail grip on 4th place. My eternal optimism is under great pressure as a re-run of the last few seasons looks imminent (mind you, the first week of September I bet on a top 4 finish, I doubt many did).
