Obscurantism: othering others II...

A quick follow up on yesterday re the Google AI project Gemini. It isn't only grossly racist, surprise surprise it is also a lefty twat censorship monster. 

It is patently a danger to freedom of speech and most definitely a censorship mis/disinformation beast: look at the Twitter thread from Texas Lindsay. It is also obvious that this is not a bug but a feature.

"Google’s Gemini AI isn’t just bias, it’s broken. Its responses are extremely offensive & arguably slanderous at times. Today, I tested it using it the exact same prompt each time, only changing names & these were the results." [sic]

That is the most obvious one but ALL are just as biased. Apologies if you do not follow politics across the pond.

Google's AI principles say that [2023 PDF] AI should avoid creating or reinforcing unfair bias, also not to deceive users or misrepresent facts. Gemini itself says it is unable to generate responses that are biased or unfair...not working out too well, certainly the bias and censorship is a clear and present danger to any fair-minded person.

Othering others, "WTF?!" would be a normal reaction. But oh my fucking GOD this is worse: Google are very, very dangerous, evil fuckwits. "Don't be evil" has become 'we are the definition of evil and fuck you whitey'. They are far more than Big Brother [quote above from this link, added 1600hrs] ever was, they have literal global cover, immense power. Their Gemini/AI is really scary. [Link to Twitter]

Hat-tip Zero Hedge. We knew about Google; we knew about Facebook (who are trying to blame algorithms [must be Al Gore Rhythms]: "Even though the math part of the data is unbiased, if the data encodes these social biases, it's hard to get away from that") but now pretty much all the major social networks (Google, Facebook, Buzzfeed, Instagram, Snapchat) are "fixing" their feeds...and I don't mean repairing.



How is it possible they missed (not slightly corrected) the biggest story in the USA* for so long?

* That the Hillary Clinton email-server investigation will be re-opened. The Director of the FBI (independently i.e. ignoring Attorney General Loretta Lynch [I wonder why?!!]) sent a letter to Congress saying that they had discovered e-mails that were relevant to the investigation. All this was ignored and stories with forty or more times fewer mentions getting preference. Wow, that data encoding social biases sure is effective.



Some say it could be payback; the whining Democratic supporters and Clinton shills and HRC herself are being very hypocritical; this is certainly not unprecedented...oh, against a Democrat nominee maybe it is.



Anyway, what we have here is...a popcorn overload!

Something I've been thinking for quite a long while now, due to increased difficulty finding certain things by 'Googling'. I put part of the difficulty down to the sheer amount of crap out there but sometimes I was thinking Google are intentionally misunderstanding my searches! 'Don't be evil'... While researching for a wrap-up on the June 7 Presidential Primaries, we discovered evidence that Google may be manipulating autocomplete recommendations in favor of Hillary Clinton. If true, this would mean that Google Searches aren’t objectively reflecting what the majority of Internet searches are actually". Hat-tip: Weasel Zippers, and yes, amazing work by Source Fed.  And related to yesterday's post.



Update 11th June: Google responds, hat-tip Zero Hedge: "the autocomplete algorithm is designed to avoid completing a search for a person’s name with terms that are offensive or disparaging"...is that for all 'sides'? At least from now on it will be anyway...maybe.

There's a reason for the octopus...With private investigators and hacking all over the news in the UK (well, most of the news media: some aren't as keen as they were over Murdoch bashing) Michele's ordeal should start to worry us all a bit: "Googling of certain things was creating a perfect storm of terrorism profiling. Because somewhere out there, someone was watching." I am sure you were already aware if not worried. Via Zerohedge we realise what Google (amongst others) knows about us: Tom Gara writing on Corporate Intelligence, the WSJ business news blog digs deeper and discovers a hackers' and hence PI's goldmine. Tom goes on to see the good side of this:

"There’s another side to this, of course. In the long run our online histories will become one of our most cherished forms of memory, in some ways far more powerful than anything our brains are capable of. Gmail was one of the first Google services we signed into, and that was less than a decade ago. The Chrome browser has been around less than half as long. Our web histories are still young.



Give them another ten years and they will paint a picture of our past — of who we were — more detailed than any memory."

There's also diaries and photographs of course but I know what he means!

Well this is scary...or maybe not, maybe it's just me: I can remember doing computer courses in Word, Excel, setting up an email account and sending an e-mail etc, using the internet (ooooh!); even back then the tutor had us put Google as the home page - something I still always do - but it seems so last century...oh, it was! The Google doodle today is for the fourteenth birthday of Google...14! It seems forever.
