Today is Armed Forces Day: "Today, thousands of people across the country celebrated the men and women of the Armed Forces, past and present, at more than 300 events to mark the fifth annual Armed Forces Day."  I'm a long way off in a hot land but top marks to Cranmer for pointing out that "[Armed Forces Day] will be overlooked by millions who are oblivious, and ignored by millions more who will be aware of it but completely detached from it". His excellent post ends so well:

"Remembrance Sunday is to commemorate the dead: Armed Forces Day is to appreciate the living. Thank them while you can."

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Venezuelan coup attempts and also Military Aviation Day: Krusty failed to attend and is now on his way to Cuba - for the 11th time in 17 months - to get specialist oxygen treatment: hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT...sorry, but that makes me giggle a bit - not in a nasty way but in a totally childish way - only because of what I think was wrong with Chavez, third paragraph, here). Anyway, he hasn't been attending a lot of things lately, Caracas Chronicles have been keeping tabs. It's not hard to see a pattern in his lack of appearances (image left: click to enlarge, from El Universal, it shows minutes that Chavez has appeared/been heard etc in public). Now, admittedly the presidential election was over at the beginning of last month so there would be fewer campaign events (orange bar on graph; although there are regional elections on 16 December: state governors etc) but since then there's been some government events (blue), but no interviews, no telephone contact, no Twitter, and no press conferences...

Well, maybe not an opus but certainly worth a read: the whole article is spot on IMHO: Ian Birrel in the Evening Standard: "After Danny Boyle’s rose-tinted NHS homage, Coalition attempts at its essential overhaul could be political suicide"...

"Meanwhile the case for reform grows more urgent, the funding choices more stark. Ironically, the end result is that a sentimental segment of an otherwise exhilarating Olympic ceremony will only make it that much harder to save the very institution put on show with such pride to the world."

Update: and just in case any of you were in doubt*: "Labour politicians yesterday hailed the Olympic opening ceremony as a ‘socialist’ event and ‘the best advert for the party for years".
