Oncoming oriental 'offensive'...

[edited] No, not an imminent attack by China - they've been doing that for decades! No, just presuming an economic onslaught from the Eastern hemisphere soon: another good graphic at The Visual Capitalist. Below it is clipped but the link has the full graphic and explanations of each quadrant and specific details. All of the countries in 80%-plus portion the high-mobility, high-recovery section - apart from Israel - are Far East/Australasia, logical in a way I guess with the westward global spread timeline. Worth noting that there will definitely be a 'lag' in the data so UK and Netherlands for instance are well behind when in reality as of this week much is opened/opening up. The numbers and data used obviously rely on the national governments for recovery rate calculations etc.

"COVID-19 has brought the world to a halt—but after months of uncertainty, it seems that the situation is slowly taking a turn for the better."... "Today's chart measures... two metrics for each country: the mobility rate and the COVID-19 recovery rate:

Mobility Index: change in activity around workplaces, subtracting activity around residences, measured as a percentage deviation from the baseline.

COVID-19 Recovery Rate: number of recovered cases in a country is measured as the percentage of total cases"

Outbreak overtures...

Did you ever notice that the word 'PANDEMIC' is 'PANIC' with 'DEM' in the middle? Anyhooo...

They are largely vilified now for wrong or delayed action and China-protecting messages but they were at least on the right track with this doc (last year's annual report) by the GPMB; the WHO acting as the host organization for the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board, although the publication does claim "This publication contains the collective views of the members of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board and does not necessarily represent the views and policies of WHO or the World Bank".

Preparing for the worst:a rapidly spreading, lethal respiratory pathogen pandemic: [LINK]

"High-impact respiratory pathogens, such as an especially deadly strain of influenza, pose particular global risks in the modern age. The pathogens are spread via respiratory droplets; they can infect a large number of people very quickly and with today’s transportation infrastructure, move rapidly across multiple geographies. In addition to a greater risk of pandemics from natural pathogens, scientific developments allow for disease-causing microorganisms to be engineered or recreated in laboratories. Should countries, terrorist groups, or scientifically advanced individuals create or obtain and then use biological weapons that have the characteristics of a novel, high-impact respiratory pathogen, the consequences could be as severe as, or even greater, than those of a natural epidemic, as could an accidental release of epidemic-prone microorganisms."

They're definitely way off with their GDP loss predictions (page 14)...

[Edit] Again: did you ever notice that the word 'PANDEMIC' is 'PANIC' with 'DEM' in the middle? "If you want to create a totally false panic about a totally false pandemic – pick a coronavirus." [LINK] "They can not 'confirm' something for which there is no accurate test."

Overall oblations...

Intersting stuff from Carrie Osgood at CarrieOnAdventures (great name btw): "Major world religions: based on the proportional world population map" taken "a step further by incorporating data from the World Religion Database to show geographic trends across the continents (2010 figures)."

Detail and discussion by Frank Jacobs at the Big Think.

Outstanding opportunities outweigh obedientiary overburdening IV...

Little comment from Ows, no need: Ewen Stewart (Director of the think-tank Global Britain; needless to say it but I will, it is Eurosceptic) writes on Brexit Central today: 'Global Britain just became the world’s top investment destination (despite Brexit, of course)'.

"Another week and another piece of good news in the real world – not the parallel, unproductive world of Westminster."

A dozen examples of good news stories, "The Jeremiahs of Remain were completely and totally wrong on almost every front", followed by: "Let us look at what has happened over the last two years:

  • Inward investment – the UK for the first time ever is the global number 1, displacing the US;

  • Investment is broadly based across numerous sectors including manufacturing, IT, financial services and business services;

  • Unemployment is now the joint lowest since 1974;

  • Total employment is now 32.7 million – the biggest ever, growing by 800,000 since the referendum – contrasting with the Treasury’s predicted 500,000 fall in employment immediately on a leave vote – a positive gain of 1.3 million jobs over what was predicted;

  • Wage growth in February was 3.5% – the joint highest on record (with 2008) – ahead of inflation which was 1.9% in the same month;

  • The UK minimum wage is the highest of any major country in the EU and twice that of Spain, three times that of Poland and six times that of Romania. No wonder the UK is a beacon for workers; and,

  •  GDP has grown each and every quarter, in contrast to the absurd Treasury forecast of a fall of 5%."

Contrasting this with the EU is an eye-opener for those unblinkered; most of us know it anyway but the Remainers seem not to want to see.

Bizarrely the Conservative Party is so in awe of its failing Brussels cousin that it has lost the confidence to demonstrate our own strengths. The Conservative Government is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory based on a false reality and shameful distortion of the facts.

Overly opulent...

Interesting info graphic from Jeff Desjardins over at the Money Project: The Richest People in Human History (Part 1) [Link]. Obviously visit the site and zoom the image to get all the detail. I'll look forward to subsequent parts.

Obviously (as the write-up states) this is very difficult to get equivalence with more modern or present times and depends who you ask and what conversions etc are used but it does throw up some good bits: right place, right time backing the winner was Alan Rufus who William I made the 1st Lord of Richmond - a large chunk of northern England who - by "1086 he had become one of the richest and most powerful men of England" [Wiki]; or Solomon's wealth measured in trillions. And who had heard of Jakob Fugger, the Rockefeller of the 15th & 16th centuries; the "most influential businessman of all time"?

Others' odd outlook...

The WEF has published their own [PDF] report on 2017: the World Economic Forum is "committed to improving the state of the world, is the international organization for public-private cooperation", which is very close to a simple description of real Fascism! I admit to being a simple soul and like pictures and graphs etc so for a brief summary look at Figure 2 (image above), the table on page 4. You will see two grids that are the 'Top 5 Global Risks in Terms of Likelihood' and the 'Top 5 Global Risks in Terms of Impact' over the years. I would argue that to have NO economic or political (EU? US?) risk for 2017 is fantasy (we'll see soon enough I guess) and to have extreme weather event as as TOP in terms of likelihood and 2nd top in terms of impact is lunacy (remember, this is global impact). FFS.

Obscurum per obscurius...

"World Trade Collapses in Dollars, Languishes in Volume" by Wolf Richter (on Wolf Street). "World trade in goods is just one factor in the global economy..." but is currently at its lowest level in a decade.

Owning outstanding...

Outstanding as in not yet paid! Interesting visualization of then nearly USD 60 T-T-Trillion world debt by country (note: the data comes from the IMF and only covers public government debt i.e. this excludes the debt of citizens, businesses and unfunded liabilities). It is also colour coded by region. As usual click to enlarge or see it courtesy of Visual Capitalist (Hat-tip Zero Hedge).

It goes with a previous image of the World Economy that isn't as relative as you'd think: Japan for instance with 6.18% of total economic production but has almost 20% of global debt; along with the USA the two countries account for just under 30% of the global economy but just under 50% of the global debt...and who owns that debt?

Next month Owsblog reaches it's 10 year birthday, pity I'm hardly managing a couple of blogposts a month! I've made excuses before and been busy before.  :-(
