Ocean oscillations...

Not written about Pakistan directly before, except if you include all the problems with a certain community then I have mentioned it indirectly (mostly not good) a few times and for quite a while. 

Today, I only write this after watching rugby union at the weekend...bear with me...The BT Sport commentator remarked about their charity efforts for the Pakistan floods. I must admit I hadn't heard a thing (having been in the Americas for most of the last few months) so I looked it up.

That image is from the Wiki page and what struck me more is that in the first four paragraphs of that page they mention climate change nine (9) times**. After that it isn't repeated until the references at the foot of the page, almost like they were focussing and iterating...trying to convey a message? Here's the first paragraph:

In the sidebar they at least mention other causes: "Poor urban planning, Heavy monsoon rains, climate change". The first two they have got correct. The main text in the 'Impact' section goes on to say these are the worst floods since 2010. Which, in turn, were comparable to the floods of 1988, 1995, and 1997...oh. The monsoon rain that fell in 2010 was the highest since 1994 (another year...they missed 1992) which made it the second highest since 1961 (the 50 years recorded then 1961-2011). 

Hmmmm, see where I'm going with this? Seems the Pakistani Government would try to sort this out... oh they did, back in the 70s after the floods of 1973 and 1976. Difficult though, that Indus thing (big river apparently) starts in a gorge starting in the Himalayas (big snowy mountain range apparently).

FFS. 

These floods happen all the time; in fact you could probably time them, literally. I wouldn't mind betting there's a boy and a girl involved. These climate patterns often lead to 'a cascade of global impacts' [LINK], El Niño–La Niña oscillation, part of  "the intricate relationship between the ocean and the atmosphere" led in 2010 to unusually intense monsoon rains; in fact every flood year mentioned above coincides with La Niña, which "impacts the global climate and disrupts normal weather patterns, which can lead to intense storms in some places and droughts in others". That last sentence was from the Wiki page, they were happy to say that back then (cue Lefty editing) but today it is all about climate CHANGE. No it ISN'T; these are climate events that have happened for hundreds of years! Probably for ever.

Hopefully a belated return to the sensible Right and back away from the turgid lefty 'backward progressive' direction we have been heading for 20 years. Just a bit of fun but the two images are from  January 2010, when Gordon Brown (Brownstuff) was still Prime Minister (seems a decade ago!...oh) and the whole of the UK was white with snow and beset by blizzards.

[edited for typos] The picture to the left was Lake Oroville in California - one of the state's key water sources - towards the end of 2015. The El Niño storms helped alleviate things early last year. years of 'drought' hadn't helped.



This year things are very different, with more storms expected and the 'wet season' only half done, the main and emergency spillways are coping but damaged; evacuations are ongoing.



Thing is, if you look at the pictures on the BBC, the whole hill beneath the spillway seems to be being eroded away. All sources say the dam is safe...but what about the infill and earthwork, the hill? Updates on Zero Hedge of this "Never-Happened-Before Event" have a lot covered and various videos and pictures of the damage.



Apparently "California spent $25 billion on entitlements for illegals last year, and only budgeted $730 million for water infrastructure. I don't think that is what caused Oroville to fail, but it really is something to consider..." [quote from Jim Stone info from FAIR, 2014]

Reading the sign you can see what is, in effect, all you need to know about the flood disaster and damage that is currently happening in the north of England. The problem is NOT climate change! The floods are NOT unprecedented and have happened for centuries! In England and the UK it rains a lot; sometimes lots and lots! Sometimes it is snow and the thaw causes the floods; sometimes just heavy rain.  For hundreds of years up until 1997 rivers known for flooding were regularly dredged (as were the Somerset Levels); for places like York, currently flooded from the river Ouse overflowing, there is data from centuries ago: "Systematic flood level readings from 1877 and a wealth of documentary records dating back as far as 1263 AD give the City of York a long and rich history of flood records."... "The inclusion of the extended historical flood record (1263–2000) provides an additional eleven events pre-1800, of which five are greater than the largest event in the period 1800–2000."**



The Environment Agency is not fit for purpose and it's adherence to the crazy "....EU directive which discourages proper dredging has been identified as an issue." [WUWT]. I am sure it is inefficiency and inadequacy from the EA making the problems worse: I am certain they wouldn't be doing this on purpose...would they?

The UK government's Climate Change Act (what's Miliband minor doing now, anyone?) will probably cost 15 to 20 billion quid a year; the whole national energy policy - and the coming power outrages - is based around it.

"Yet it was on that modest rise in the 1980s and 1990s that the whole of the greatest and most expensive scare in history was launched on its way, with all the terrifying political and economic consequences we see around us today... ...The price we are all increasingly having to pay for their gullibility is incalculable."

"The days may be getting longer, but there’s still not a hint of springtime sunshine in Germany. Weather data shows that this winter has been the gloomiest in 43 years. If the sun doesn't start shining soon, it will be the darkest winter on record". Now, I'm not typically a sad bastard (bitter and twisted yes, sad no) and we know that 'light deprivation can have a serious effect on the human body, leading to what is known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD)' but at the moment it seems overcast all day every day...light grey, not sun, snow or rain...just grey. More from Speigel: "To make matters worse, the weather has become progressively gloomier since winter began. While sunshine levels nationwide were 10 percent below average in December, they dropped to 50 percent in December and are between 60 and 70 percent so far for February." Hat-tip to WUWT.
